PERSONALITY: Chitose and the immaturityIf someone looks at Chitose at first, he will probably remind them a bit of your typical kid hero. He's immature to a fault, is cheerful and outgoing, loves playing pranks on others (though apparently not as much anymore as he liked to do as a child), eats a lot and tries to duck out from the responsibilities and punishment of said pranks. He is quite confident to the point of arrogance when it comes to his sword skills, has an ongoing rivalry with the other main sword-wielder Kazuya and is quite competitive in general. That is one of the reasons why he keeps training - he enjoys a good challenge, but also dislikes the idea of losing.
Chitose has also a rather quick temper and gets teased a lot by the others - to the point that he has almost a butt monkey status between his friends, as they like to team up against him. They treat him like a child a lot and call him reckless or even stupid - much to his dismay, as he wants to be taken seriously by them. Nevertheless, Chitose also tends to tease the others a lot, particularly Yukina for her naivety and Senkimaru... just in general. Chitose is also prone to get embarrassed rather easily or to let praise go to his head when somebody expresses interest in him or speaks in high terms of him. The embarrassment also extends to admitting liking or loving someone, which results in a lot of awkward blushing on his side.
Chitose is also not a fan of formalities and basically drops those as fast as he can, no matter who they are and which status they have (save for the princess and the Elders). Likewise, Chitose has no wish to be addressed formally and offers the simple first name basis as anything else makes him feel uncomfortable. Another side of his immaturity is that he is a bit of a hypocrite. An example for this would be that he gets mad at the other oni-clanheads for being involved with humans even though he is involved with humans himself. He's also quick to jump to accusations and conclusions and gets scolded by the others for doing so as he often lacks conclusive evidence.
The Oni clan-head of Kyushu and warrior ChitoseThe childish antics he displays when he is together with his friends don't change the fact that he is the head of his clan and it shows. Even though he dislikes the oni-rules, he abides by them rather strictly and gets passionately enraged when the more respected clan chiefs don't obey them. This especially shows with Kazutake, who is the most respected by the elderly people. Likewise, Chitose also kept it a secret that his clan is involved with humans, as the biggest punishment for this can be that his clan gets expelled from the council of the 10 clans, turning them into rogue oni.
When it isn't about pranks, Chitose is rather strict with himself and does take responsibilities for his actions, spawning from little things about having said something insensitive in the heat of the moment to taking the responsibility for having let someone die - he takes care of all the formalities that come up with such an incident, even if it isn't strictly his fault or task. In the visions of Yasehime it is also shown that his duties take a higher priority than his life itself.
Even though Chitose dislikes formalities, when he introduces himself with his last name he does it in a very formal way, like he has been taught. He also shows to like politeness in general, for example introducing yourself to others or apologizing for mistakes raise his affection. He is also shown to be rather careful and suspicious of strangers. There is no such thing as instant trust with Chitose, shown by the fact that it takes months to reveal his last name to Yukina (the oni-rules state they are only allowed to tell their last name to someone they trust).
Additionally, he keeps a rather cool and clear head in serious situations. He doesn't let himself be provoked and tries to keep the others calm when the same happens to them. If he realizes that fighting in a situation doesn't make much sense anymore, he draws back instead of wasting energy and resources. If he notices a quick withdraw would be the wisest action to follow, he does his best to do just that instead of recklessly jumping into the fight, ensuring everyone's safety. Even during fights he tries to analyse his enemy's tactics, which made it possible for him to keep up with Yachiyo, who uses almost invisible threads as a weapon and forces him into using other strategies.
This part of his personality contradicts with the immaturity and recklessness he displays at first glance and thus, a lot of people underestimate him. This even happens with people who know him already for a long time. Such an example would be Kazutake - once Kazutake watches Chitose's actions in the fandisc, he confesses to Yukina he feels overtaken by Chitose, as he feels Chitose fulfills the role as a clan chief better than he does.
Chitose, the kind-hearted friendYukina likes to emphasize that Chitose is kind in her inner monologues and this is indeed very true. Despite him being suspicious by nature, he warms up to people rather fast. This can be seen by his interactions with Senkimaru, whom he never fully trusts, but it doesn't take too long for Chitose to hang out with the smaller oni and to tease him in a good-natured manner. He helps and saves an unknown human child despite the danger of getting seen in the act in the manga. He respects anyone who is doing their best, no matter what task it is. Despite his short temper he is very patient, as can be seen when Yukina tries to fix his sleeve - as she has no experience whatsoever, instead of giving up on her he stays and waits until she is finished even though she stitches him sometimes. Unlike many oni, Chitose believes that humans and oni can live together if they would just try it. On top of that he even shows forgiveness instead of self-righteousness to the rogue oni, the main antagonists of the game, who are responsible for many of the harsh experiences they make.
(Shutendoji: "I will... die..? As rogue oni... by the hands of the ten clans?"
Chitose: "No. You were released from being a rogue oni. You aren't a rogue oni anymore. That's why... rest in peace."
Shutendoji: "So... so I was forgiven...")
Chitose values the bonds between people highly and so much that even going as far as to say in his introduction sentence was about how the feelings for other people are stronger than anything else in the PV. And indeed, Chitose puts a lot of energy and time in maintaining and treasuring those bonds. He is willing to listen if he sees that someone is sad or had a nightmare, knowing that the other person will perhaps feel better about it after a talk. He is ready to lend a hand when he notices that someone is in trouble, which is best shown with Kazutake. Despite Chitose's initial rage against Kazutake, he offers Kazutake and his people (they were homeless) to stay on his lands. He is protective of the people he cares about to the point that it gets almost self-sacrificing, seen when he attempts to take the three rogue oni on on his own instead of asking for help.
However, Chitose also gets really shaken up if one of his bonds seem more instable. He falls into a sort of depression when he assumes that his human brother-figure is scared of him after seeing his true form. This also seems to be the actual main reason for his accusations against Kazutake and Kazuya - he felt saddened by the fact that they didn't tell him about being involved with humans.
Goals and motivationChitose's goals and motivation can be put in three categories.
First, he wants to be a good clan chief. He has been told that the qualities of a clan chief are reflected by the way the people of said clan act. Chitose wants his clan to be warm and welcoming and gives everything to create such an atmosphere. He seems to be rather self-conscious about this.
Secondly, Chitose is a lot about protecting and helping other people. He even states his goal is "not to let anyone die". While that is a promise he made to himself with the start of the war, it is likely the reason why he gets involved in the war in the first place. He can't leave his human surrogate family alone in their time of crisis, much less with the knowledge of rogue oni possibly attacking them. This wish is the reason that leads him to act reckless from time to time.
The third one is one he develops over the course of the game due to being confronted with the realities of their situation. The fact that the other oni are also involved with humans as well as the hatred the rogue oni have, which results into them doing corrupt things leads Chitose to wanting to abolish the old oni rules. He wants the people to be able to live peacefully together without the fear and restriction of labels.
RelationshipsYukina - Chitose is one of the datable characters in the game. At the beginning he teases Yukina a lot for being unfeminine and naive, but they develop a friendship during the course of his route. Their relationship involves a lot of support from both sides, showing the other new perspectives and other views. Thanks to her, Chitose overcomes his depression and starts to seriously consider the above explained third goal. While the people around them seem to ship them, the two are often in denial about their feelings until they become a couple. Interestingly, Yukina is also the more proactive one between them when it comes to said feelings.
The Shimazu - They are probably one of the biggest influences in Chitose's life. If you watch them it is not hard to see why Chitose turned out the way he did. Both Yoshihiro and Toyohisa are very welcoming and friendly people, and they are both like family to Chitose. Yoshihiro takes on the father role, and goes from binge drinking with Chitose to having serious discussions about how it is like to kill other people. Toyohisa is like Chitose's brother and Chitose looks really happy when he talks about him or sees him. Toyohisa is a hard worker and trains a lot, which also motivates Chitose in keeping up with the training. Thanks to these two, Chitose believes that not all humans are bad. These two are also complete shippers on deck when it comes to Chitose and Yukina, as they immediately believe she is his bride and insist on calling her that way and they play a factor in them becoming a couple.
Kazutake - Kazutake is another big brother figure for Chitose. He fills a stricter role and punishes Chitose the physical way when Chitose's nonsense gets too big. Chitose respects Kazutake a lot, and Kazutake does take his side every once in a while when the teasing fest becomes too big. Kazutake is also one of the reasons why he starts thinking about the oni-rules and his own behavior.
Shin - Shin is yet another big brother figure of Chitose. Shin likes to troll Chitose a lot. Chitose can't keep up with him, as Shin is rather skilled when it comes to talking and knows exactly what to say to get Chitose do whatever he wants him to do. Shin is like the one person Chitose doesn't want to hang out with alone if he can help it.
Kazuya - Kazuya and Chitose can probably fit in the red oni/blue oni-trope quite literally. They have a rivalry when it comes to their swordmanship and they complement each other in quite a few traits. While Chitose is hot-tempered, Kazuya is the stoic one between the two. In serious situations, Chitose keeps a cool head, while Kazuya becomes utterly reckless. Other than that, if the oni split up for fighting, Kazuya and Chitose often team up and fight together, side by side, showing that they are actually good friends. It might also have to do a bit with their powers, as Chitose is fire-based, while Kazuya is ice-based and thus, Kazuya is able to prevent greater damage to their surroundings. Kazuya also tags along for Chitose's more childish antics, though he likes to shift all the blame on Chitose when they get caught. Kazuya also likes to tease and insult Chitose quite a bit.
Shutendoji - Shutendoji is the main antagonist of his route and the one who wants to kill the clan chiefs of the 10 clans in order to make a place for rogue oni. Upon suffering defeat by Chitose's true oni form, Shutendoji develops a sort of obsession with wanting to kill him. Chitose, on the other hand, realizes where his behavior comes from and his interactions with him make him realize that the concept of rogue oni can be quite fatal (you don't drink medicine that drives you almost crazy just for the fun of it).
ABILITIES: Oni Powers:
Healing - As an oni, Chitose's wounds heal a lot quicker than the ones of normal humans. Often it is just a matter of seconds or minutes until they are closed again and thus, it becomes hard to kill him by anything that isn't a fatal blow. He is also more resistant to illnesses than humans.
Superhuman physical abilities - As an oni, Chitose is stronger, faster, has more endurance and stamina than a normal human.
True Oni Form - Chitose can switch forms. By switching his form, his appearance will change quite a bit and he'll look more like how you usually imagine an oni. His strength amplifies and he is able to resist things like hypnosis. He usually has full control over this transformation, but it can also be triggered through danger towards himself and people he cares about.
Other:
Sword Fighting - Chitose has learned sword fighting since a young age and is able to wield his katana with one hand.
Fire - He is able to cause fire with the help of his sword. In the normal form, his sword is just flaming, but when he switches to his true oni form, Chitose can also cause fire bursts with it.
POSSESSIONS: Chitose will bring his katana, Hotarumaru. As the name implies, it is a flaming sword.

[The whole thing seemed a little surreal, but at the moment, Chitose couldn't care less about it.]Hey, you! I'm talking to you! What kind of events are those? Tell me at least that much, instead of dumping me in the middle of nowhere!
[He has an impatient look on his face and as he looks around, he notices his pocket watch - and wait, didn't that show just someone? Perhaps that was the owner of the voice.]Alright, if you don't want to come out, perhaps I can make you come out.
INTROSPECTION SAMPLE:That a town alone could make him feel
this uneasy was new for Chitose. Either something really horrible happened in this town or something made the people leave this place. Those were the conclusions Chitose had drawn while he was roaming through the streets. Considering he had no idea what these mentioned events were, he felt like he needed to be prepared for everything and anything that might come. He expected something to jump at him from the corners, but nothing of note had happened so far.
Until the night hours arrived.
He wasn't prepared for the fact that the empty and seemingly dead city suddenly turned into a lively one. Where did all those people come from suddenly? Just why were they all hiding during the day? It wasn't that hot, was it? Well, if the people of this city decided to come out at night there wasn't much he could do. Perhaps now he could at least find someone who would give him some more information.
He wanted to go to one of the now opened shops when he felt something like a malicious intent behind him. Was there someone who was going to attack him? He narrowed his eyes and grabbed the hilt of his sword tightly. His steps quickened, he needed to get some distance before he wanted to react to whatever was following him. Once he felt that the distance was good enough, he turned around, drawing his sword while a small grin played around his lips. His expression changed into surprise when he laid his eyes on the opponent.
"A... monster...?"
That wasn't what he expected. That wasn't anything he fought before, but there was no reason to run away just yet. He hadn't measured up this thing's strength yet. Perhaps he should just view it as a sort of new challenge? The grin returned.
"No matter if you're a monster or something else, if you're going to attack me, you'll have to face the consequences!"
